Port of Spain, November 14th, 2018. The North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) joined the global community in raising awareness and educating the public on preventing and controlling diabetes with a special focus on youth during the month of November.

World Diabetes Day, observed on November 14th is the world’s largest diabetes awareness movement, the theme of the 2018-2019 campaign is ‘The Family and Diabetes’. The NWRHA partnered with the Ministry of Education and Belmont St Francois Girls RC School to form a human circle to represent Diabetes Awareness.

The blue circle is the universal symbol for the global fight against diabetes. Recognizing that education is an integral component of diabetes prevention, management and care, students were educated on the important role of nutrition and a healthy and balanced lifestyle in the management and prevention of diabetes.

These children also participated in an active Zumba session which was held on the front lawn of the Port-of-Spain General Hospital and an interactive lecture was given on the benefits of drinking water and avoiding sugary drinks. Supporting this were physicians from Primary Care: Children’s Assessment Unit and Child Welfare Clinic.

While the youth activities continued, members of the public were offered free blood glucose, cholesterol and pressure screening in the Main Atrium of the POSGH. In the Maternity Department, cooking demonstrations for diabetics were conducted by nutritionists.

Throughout the month of November, the NWRHA will be conducting diabetes and foot care lectures in the Oxford Street, St James and Petit Valley Health Centres and Workplace Wellness Initiatives.

Join the NWRHA in getting Hooked On Good Health. The Authority wishes to empower individuals and communities. Let’s unite and take action to prevent and control diabetes.
