Port of Spain, November 15th, 2018. The North West Regional Health Authority’s George Street Health Centre successfully hosted its fourth annual event for chronic disease patients on November 1st 2018 entitled ‘An Asian Affair’.

Appropriately decorated to reflect its Asian theme, the institution was heavily packed with enthusiastic patients from the community who were treated to a series of entertainment nuggets such as singing, dancing and comedy. Patients were also treated to healthier versions of Chinese foods.

Specially invited guest and Minister of Health, the Honorable Terrence Deyalsingh were present to participate and enjoy the evening’s proceedings with the patients. In addressing the chronic disease patients, the Minister alluded to the fact that more has to be done in order to reduce the effects and the burden of chronic disease on society. He also commended the staff at the institution for using their own resources to host such a spectacular and memorable event.

Chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke and chronic kidney disease continue to rank at the top of Trinidad and Tobago’s mortality listing and in so doing contribute to over 60% of deaths annually. These diseases are significantly attributed to a person’s lifestyle habits and can be curtailed through continuous awareness, education and intervention. The NWRHA in its commitment and continued drive to improve wellness and encourage healthy lifestyles hosts a series of year round health interventions such as its Care Fairs and Marketing Good Health which are aimed at empowering and educating both individuals and communities.

Though located in a nationally deemed hot spot and high crime area, George Street Health Centre proves itself a gem in the region’s geographical grasp. As one of the Authority’s primary health care facilities, the institution via its team of dedicated and empowered medical professionals passionately embraces its responsibilities of delivering clinical excellence through an integrated health care approach to its patients. It is in the execution of these responsibilities that the staff illustrates their commitment to providing a sense of wellness to the patients and this is dispensed effortlessly through their daily interaction with patients.

The collaborated and coordinated efforts that brought this event to fruition highlights the importance of teamwork, camaraderie and commitment.
