General Hospital Port-of-Spain

The Department of Pathology provides Laboratory, Clinical and Mortuary services to the North West Regional Health Authority.

Services are provided to the General Hospital Port-of-Spain, the National Radiotherapy Centre, The St James Medical Complex, the St. Ann’s Hospital, St James District Health Facility and the seventeen Health Centres under the purview of the North West Regional Health Authority.

Full services are operational from Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm. Emergency services are provided in Haematology, Immuno-Haematology and Biochemistry from 4pm to 8:00am weekdays, all weekends and Public Holidays. Microbiology also provides emergency services on weekends.

The Laboratory services provided includes:

  • Haematology:
    Complete blood counts (CBC), Erythrocyte sedimentation rates (ESR), Reticulocyte counts (Retic) Haemoglobin Electrophoresis (HbEp) Coagulation studies
  • Hospital Transfusion Unit/Immuno-haematology:
    Group and cross-match blood and blood products, Blood group, Antibody identification and Titre
  • Immunology:
    Rheumatoid factor, Complement, Protein electrophoresis, Antinuclear factor, anti DNA, Immunoglobulins, ASOT
  • Histology/Cytology:
    Pap smears, Fluid for cytology, Histology, Immunohistochemistry, Special stains
  • Microbiology:
    Culture and antimicrobial sensitivity, Ova, Cyst and parasite, Dengue, Rapid HIV, Hepatitis C and B, Leptospirosis
  • Biochemistry:
    Renal function, Lipids, Liver function Cardiac markers, Tumor markers, Cancer markers, Thyroid, B12, Folate, Glucose, Glycohaemoglobin, Hormones.
